Safety codes officers are involved with the elements of public safety covered by the Safety Codes Act in the following areas: Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Gas, Fire, Pressure Equipment, Amusement Rides, Elevators and Passenger Ropeways. They inspect the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of structures and systems to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
For complete information on the requirements for becoming a safety codes officer in each discipline, please go to the Learning Path on our secure online system, Council Connect.
To begin the application process, you will need to create an account in Council Connect. You will then be able to view the requirements for the discipline you want to apply for including the entry qualifications and training requirements.
Using Council Connect, you will create a prequalification application where you provide your certificate/degree/diploma, and a point form outline of your experience to demonstrate that you meet the entry qualifications. Your qualifications in relation to the requirements set by legislation and/or policy will be reviewed and you will be advised whether you meet the criteria. The fee for the prequalification is $50.00.
If your qualifications are approved, you will be able to begin the courses needed for certification. Training information is available here.
Once you have completed all the training requirements, you will apply for certification. The fee is $50.00 and must be renewed every 3 years to remain certified.
