In 2019 the Council launched the Continuing Education program for Safety Codes Officers. Codes change, new technical information becomes available, and SCOs need to ensure that their expertise remains current. The Continuing Education program ensures that upgrading relevant knowledge and skills is a priority for SCOs, which ultimately contributes to a more effective safety system in Alberta.
Participation in a continuing education program will benefit SCOs by:
- helping maintain and enhance knowledge of current practices, technologies, and trends in each discipline and in the safety codes system;
- supporting career development and meeting performance or learning goals set by SCOs or by their employers; and
- aligning with other regulated occupations and enhancing the credibility of SCOs by demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning.
All active SCOs need to complete continuing education activities and report their completed credits to the Council in order to maintain their certification(s). The program allows SCOs to identify areas of new technology and best practices that they would like to study to work at a higher level and with more confidence. This is important because it gives SCOs ownership of their learning and development. All Council training will earn continuing education credits, and SCOs who want to move to a new Group or Level can gain continuing education credits at the same time.
Please refer to the page Gaining Credits for more information on how to earn credits.
