Designation of Powers

The key elements of designation of powers are an organization’s accreditation and its partnership with certified safety codes officers.

Designation of Powers
  • Authorizes safety codes officers to function within the framework of an accredited organization.
  • Provides the safety codes officer the authority to administer the Safety Codes Act.
  • Extends to an individual other than a safety codes officer for the purposes of permit issuance. This application (and subsequent authority) is very specific, limited to permit issuance only under the Act.
  • Permit Issuers are given a designation of powers certificate only (no identification card), based upon their employment with an accredited organization.
  • Depends upon the individual’s level of certification, the organization’s scope of accreditation, and the authority parameters determined by the Technical Council.
To obtain designation of powers, the safety codes officer, or person hired to issue permits, and the accredited organization make a joint application and pay a fee to the Safety Codes Council.
