This course provides an overview of the safety codes system in Alberta, including the laws, regulations, scope and roles of partners in the public safety system.  
This course covers the following topics:

  • Law for Safety Codes Officers
  • Administrative Law, Civil Law, and relevant case precedent law
  • Ethics for Safety Codes Officers
  • Freedom of Information and Privacy Act
  • Safety Codes Act
  • Administrative Items Regulations
  • Permit Regulation
  • Quality Management Plans and how they affect Safety Codes Officers
  • Safety Codes Council By-laws
  • Appeal procedures

This self-paced online course includes a 1-day seminar or 2-day webinar (9:00am-11:30am over two days) with practical application of the Safety Codes Act. You must attend the 1-day seminar or webinar.

This seminar is a facilitated session where you will review and apply those sections of the Safety Codes Act, Administrative Items Regulation, and Council Bylaws dealing with Orders and Appeals. At the conclusion of the seminar, you will have the option of writing the final exam for this course, which is based on all four units covered in the course. 
Examination — pass grade is 80%, and participation in either the 1-day seminar or 2-day webinar.
Cost includes online course materials, assigned course advisor, seminar, and examination.
