Training and Certification
Certification
A core responsibility of the Safety Codes Council is to certify competent Safety Codes Officers in the nine disciplines covered under the Safety Codes Act. Sub Councils establish the certification requirements and approve the training materials for Safety Codes Officers in their respective disciplines.
The certification process for Safety Codes Officers consists, in simple terms, of entry requirements and training. The entry requirements identify acceptable training and experience an individual must already have to be accepted into the competency.
Training
There are two categories of Council training an individual must complete to become a Safety Codes Officer: base competency training and technical training.
The base competency training is common to all disciplines and levels of certification. It consists of three courses: Interpretation and Application of the Safety Codes Act; Clearly Communicating; and Written Communications. The technical training is discipline specific.
Mentoring
The Safety Codes Council's mentoring program is designed to assist organizations in supporting mentor and mentee relationships between experienced and less experienced safety codes officers.
Designation of Powers
Designation of powers is the process of authorizing Safety Codes Officers to function within the framework of an accredited organization. It provides the Safety Codes Officer the authority to administer the Safety Codes Act. Permit Issuers are individuals who have been designated powers under the Safety Codes Act to issue permits for activities in the building, electrical, gas, and plumbing disciplines. Permit Issuers may issue permits in instances where specific Safety Codes Officer skills are not needed.
