New Safety Codes Council Chair Appointed
From the Desk of the Acting President & Chief Executive Officer:
The Honourable Hector Goudreau, Minister of Municipal Affairs, today announced the appointment of Robert (Bob) Blakely as the new Chair of the Safety Codes Council, replacing Dr. Ken Sauer who has served in that capacity since 1994. It is with mixed feelings that I greet this news.
First, I am very pleased the Minister selected Bob Blakely from among those who expressed interest in the opportunity to serve as the Council’s next Chair. Bob’s involvement with the Safety Codes Council goes back to 1997 when he was appointed as the Labour representative on the Coordinating Committee, a role he filled until 2000 when he resigned to pursue a new position. For the past year, Bob has been the legal representative on the Coordinating Committee and Vice-Chair of the Council. His appointment as Chair will provide much needed continuity to the Safety Codes Council as Alberta, along with the rest of the world, emerges from the financial collapse of 2008 and looks to the future.
The Council faces a number of challenges in the coming years and has an ambitious 3-year business plan. Having worked closely with Bob Blakely during the past 11 months, I am confident the Safety Codes Council is in good hands as it moves ahead.
Our departing Chair has led the Council almost since its inception. For more than 16 years, Dr. Ken Sauer has been a champion of the safety codes system in Alberta, a steady hand at the helm and a wonderful person to work with.
I know I speak for the Council members, and for all of the employees at the Council, when I say to Dr. Sauer, “Thank you for everything and all the best in the future”; and to Bob Blakely, “Congratulations and best of luck, you have awfully big shoes to fill”.
