Electrical Jurisprudence Examination

Alberta Municipal Affairs, B.C. Office of Housing and Construction Standards, and the B.C. Safety Authority have reached an agreement to provide mobility for electrical contractors in accordance with the Trade, Investment, and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA). This agreement maintains a high level of public safety in both provinces while recognizing the ability of Alberta Master Electricians and B.C. Field Safety Representatives (FSRs) to obtain electrical permits in either province.

In compliance with the TILMA, Alberta Municipal Affairs will issue an Alberta Master Electrician certificate to all applicants holding a BC FSR Certificate. The Master Electrician certificate will allow BC FSR’s to obtain electrical permits for work that falls within their scope of practice.

An FSR applicant will be required to successfully complete the Electrical Jurisprudence Exam administered by the Safety Codes Council. A copy of their FSR Certificate must also be submitted to Alberta Municipal Affairs, Administrator of the Master Electrician Program. Once an FSR has successfully completed the jurisprudence exam, they are eligible to be issued additional site-specific variances to obtain electrical permits for work in Alberta.

The Electrical Jurisprudence Exam (100081) can be written at the Safety Codes Council offices or on-line. Contact the Council at 1-888-413-0099 or 780.413.0099 to obtain a Proctor Consent Form. The exam tests knowledge from the sources listed below. Anyone writing the exam should obtain a copy of these documents and become familiar with them prior to attempting this exam.
