Roles and Responsibilities
In Alberta, safety codes officers are employed by accredited organizations, such as municipalities, corporations, or agencies.
Accredited organizations are granted authority by the Safety Codes Council to enforce the Safety Codes Act. With a Designation of Powers (DOP), safety codes officers can conduct inspections and issue permits for their employer. Safety codes officers working for these accredited organizations can independently carry out enforcement activities under their DOP.
Code of Ethics
The Safety Codes Officer Code of Ethics clarifies the ethical standards and responsibilities safety code officers must follow. While it does not address every potential situation, safety codes officers are expected to act following its spirit and intent.
The Code of Ethics was written with our sub-council members and other stakeholders. It is designed to complement existing codes of ethics from employers or professional organizations. If you have concerns about potential conflicts, please contact us.
The Safety Codes Council has a complaint investigation process to resolve concerns about the conduct, performance, or competency of an individual or organization that has authority, powers, or duties under the Safety Codes Act. Please read the Complaint Investigations web page for detailed information.
