Information Bulletins

Safety Codes Council Information Bulletins are documents that provide important information to stakeholders regarding items such as new programs or changes to existing programs and services; proposed changes to regulations or operating procedures; code publications and relevant training and certification announcements; or industry participation in stakeholder engagement initiatives.

The Safety Codes Council remains committed to providing timely and relevant information about Council programs and services, and updates on safety codes and regulations.

IB-2024-03-01: National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition: Code Update Requirement & Resources

The National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition has been published and will come into force on May 1, 2024, and a building code update requirement has been established.

IB-2024-01-17: Change in Restricted Master Electrician Scope of Practice

The restricted (installations below 750V) master electrician certificate of competency issued by the Safety Codes Council has been updated to the restricted (installations below 1000V) master electrician certificate of competency.

IB-2023-10-13: National Building Code 2019: Course Changes

The National Building Code 2019 came into force on April 01, 2019; Building courses offered by the Safety Codes Council are updated to the 2019 code as of October 16, 2023.

IB-2023-08-21: National Plumbing Code 2020: Course Changes

The National Plumbing Code 2020 came into force on April 20, 2023; all Plumbing Group A courses offered by the Safety Codes Council are updated to the 2020 code as of August 21, 2023. All new course registrations will be for the NPC 2020 versions of our courses effective immediately.

IB-2023-06-13: Master Electrician Certification Policy Update

The Master Electrician Certification Policy (2.1.3) establishes requirements for obtaining and holding a Master Electrician certificate of competency. Effective July 1, 2023, a number of administrative changes have been made to the policy for coherence, format and clarification of current practice.

IB-2023-06-02: Updated Fire Practicum Requirements for Fire SCO Applicants

In consultation with stakeholders, the Safety Codes Council has updated its practicum requirements for Fire safety codes officer B1 and B2. New practicum forms have been published and will be accepted starting immediately. Previous forms will only be accepted for practicums begun before July 1, 2023.

The National Plumbing Code of Canada (NPC) 2020 was published on March 28, 2022, and came into force on April 1, 2023. All Plumbing Group A safety codes officers and applicants are required to pass a short quiz on the code changes by January 31, 2024 to maintain their certification.

The National Fire Code – 2019 Alberta Edition came into force on December 1, 2019. All Fire discipline courses offered by the Safety Codes Council are updated to the 2019 code as of December 5, 2022.

IB-2023-01-18: Master Electrician Roles and Responsibilities Guide

In consultation with its stakeholders, the Safety Codes Council has created a Master Electrician Roles and Responsibilities guide. The purpose of the guide is to clarify and reinforce master electrician responsibilities under the Safety Codes Act as related to work completed under any permits obtained in the province of Alberta.
