Registering for Courses
Register for courses through Council Connect. Most courses are online and self-paced with a six-month completion window. Some may require webinar attendance, in-person sessions, or practical experience.

Managing your enrollment
Extensions: Request a four-month extension for $100 per course via Council Connect before the course end date. Extension instructions (PDF)
Withdrawals: To withdraw from a course, contact us. A partial refund may be available within 30 days of registration.
Transcripts: Access official transcripts through your Council Connect account.
Transfer Credit
If you have previous training or certification from another jurisdiction or organization, you may be eligible for transfer credit.
Applying for transfer credit
Who can apply: Individuals with relevant training, certification, or professional credentials from other jurisdictions or recognized organizations
When to apply: Before registering for courses - transfer credit must be approved in advance
Required documentation: Proof of training completion, course outlines, certificates, or transcripts from your previous program

Important: Each transfer credit request is assessed individually. The Council will review your documentation and determine which courses, if any, can be waived.
Exams
Registering for Exams
You can schedule your exam date online through Council Connect. Please schedule at least seven days in advance before your intended date. Exams must be completed within 6 months of course registration.

Attempts included: Your course fee includes one exam registration and attempt

Need to retake an exam?
Rewrite fee: $50 per attempt. There is no limit on the number of rewrites.
Extensions: If your rewrite date falls past the course end date, a course extension is required.
Challenging Exams
If you have enough knowledge and experience to pass an exam without taking the course, you may be eligible to challenge the exam. This allows you to demonstrate your competency and earn credit without completing the coursework.
How to challenge an exam
Who can challenge: Individuals with sufficient knowledge and experience in the subject area to pass the exam without taking the course
Challenge exam fee: $150 per exam (includes one exam attempt)
Additional attempts: $50 rewrite fee per attempt if you do not pass

Important: You will not have access to course materials when challenging an exam. You must rely on your existing knowledge and approved reference materials (codes, standards, etc.).
Courses FAQ
Do I need to take my courses in a certain order?
No, but we highly recommend starting with base competency courses before technical training if this is your first certification.
How much do courses cost?
Course prices vary by discipline and certification level. Check the Courses/Exams page on Council Connect or your discipline page for prices.
How long do I have to complete a course?
You have six months from registration to complete a course and write the associated exam. A four-month extension is available for $100 per course if you need more time.
Where can I find my final grades or my transcript?
Your transcript is available through your Council Connect account.
How do I request a course extension?
You can request a four-month extension for $100 per course before the course end date. Please submit extension requests via Council Connect. Request a Course Extension Instructions.
Can I withdraw from a course after I register?
To withdraw from a course, contact us. If you withdraw from a course within 30 days of registration, you may be eligible for a partial refund.
I have prior training that's equivalent to a course. Can I get credit?
You may be eligible for transfer credit. See the Transfer Credit section above for details, then contact us to discuss your eligibility.
Exams FAQ
Is there a separate fee to write an exam?
No, your course registration fee includes one attempt at the exam.
I didn't pass my exam; can I retake it?
Yes. You can retake exams for $50 per attempt, with no limit on the number of retakes. If you need to retake an exam after the 6-month course registration window, you must purchase a course extension first.
Can I request exam accommodations?
Yes. If you have accessibility needs that affect how you write exams, contact certification@safetycodes.ab.ca. We can discuss accommodations including alternative exam formats.
Are exams open book?
Yes. All exams are open book, and you can reference approved materials including codes, standards, and course resources. Check your course syllabus for the specific materials permitted for each exam.
How do I schedule my exam?

Where can I find my final exam results?
You’ll receive an email notification when exam results are available on Council Connect. Results are not disclosed over the phone.
Can I challenge the exam without taking the course?
Yes. If you have sufficient knowledge to pass an exam without taking the course, you can challenge it for a fee of $150 (includes one attempt). See the Challenging Exams section above for complete details on eligibility and registration.
I believe there was a grading error in my exam. Can I request a review?
Yes. You can request a reread within 30 days of receiving your results. The reread fee is $50, which is refunded if your mark increases to a passing grade. You can request one reread per exam. See the Examination Reread Form (PDF) for instructions.
