Safety Codes System Variance Data

The Safety Codes Council is committed to sharing safety codes system data to support evidence-based decisions, innovation, and improved public safety outcomes. As part of this commitment, we are publishing variance data through the Safety Codes System Data Hub to ensure our customers have access to data necessary to support a safer, more prosperous Alberta.

Why We Are Sharing This Data

Sharing variance data for analysis and trend identification provides several key benefits to the safety codes system including:

  • Informing recommendations: Data insights help inform future code recommendations and policy development.
  • Supporting innovation: Access to registered variances allows customers to see what codes are being varied, fostering innovative solutions for Albertans.
  • Risk-informed assessments: The data supports better risk-informed decision-making for those authorized to administer the Safety Codes Act.

About This Data

  • Scope: We are currently publishing variance data from the building, electrical, fire, plumbing, and pressure equipment disciplines.
  • Frequency: Data is updated on a quarterly basis, beginning with variances registered in Q1 2026.
  • Future Expansion: The current data set provides information on which articles are being varied within the code. The Council plans to expand data to provide greater insights in the future.
  • Exclusions: Please note that supplementary materials and alternative solutions are not currently being collected or retained by the Council and are not included in the data.
