Certifications
Entry Qualifications
One of the following:
- Journeyperson power line technician or power system electrician certification and six years of relevant experience* after receiving the journeyperson certificate.
- Electrical engineering technologist diploma and eight years of relevant experience* after receiving that diploma.
- Electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering degree and eight years of relevant experience* after receiving that degree.
*Relevant experience must be direct on-site experience with one or more of the following: designing and overseeing the installation of; construction of; or maintenance of electrical systems regulated and defined by the Alberta Electrical Utility Code. Work experience can include but cannot be limited to project management.
Scope of Practice
Electrical utility installations governed by the edition of the Alberta Electrical Utility Code declared in force in Alberta.

Introduction to the Safety Codes System in Alberta (100179) — $400
Written Communications for Safety Codes Officers (100145) — $325
Professional Communication Skills for Safety Codes Officers (100140) — $250
Technical Training:
Electrical Safety Codes Officer Basics (100245) — $375
Group B, Alberta Electrical Utility Code 2022 (100251) — $375
Construction Safety Training System Certificate
Continuing Education
All safety codes officers must complete 30 continuing education credits over three years to renew their certification. For discipline-specific continuing education resources, explore the Council’s education resources.
