Certifications
Entry Qualifications
- Journeyperson plumber certification.
- Environmental or Public Health Officer certification.
- Technologist diploma in a related field.
- Engineering degree in a related field.
- Bachelor of Science degree in a related field.
- Alberta Private Sewage Disposal System Installer certification.
Scope of Practice
Private sewage disposal systems governed by the edition of the Private Sewage Systems Standard of Practice declared in force in Alberta.

Base Competency:
Introduction to the Safety Codes System in Alberta (100179) — $400
Written Communications for Safety Codes Officers (100145) — $325
Professional Communication Skills for Safety Codes Officers (100140) — $250
Construction Safety Training System Certificate
Technical Training:
Alberta Onsite Wastewater Practitioner Training
Group B: Alberta Private Sewage Standard Practice 2021 (100247) — $410
Continuing Education
All safety codes officers must complete 30 continuing education credits over three years to renew their certification. For discipline-specific continuing education resources, explore the Council’s education resources.
