Council launches new video series to support understanding of permits in Alberta
The Safety Codes Council is pleased to introduce a new six‑part educational video series designed to support builders, homeowners, and partners who work within Alberta’s safety codes system.
Developed in partnership with the Professional Home Builders Institute (PHBI) and BILD Alberta, this series provides clear, practical guidance on the permitting requirements that support safe, compliant construction across the province.
Supporting Safe, Compliant Construction
Understanding permitting requirements is essential for ensuring that structures and equipment are constructed safely, legally, and responsibly. While permits, drawings, documentation, and inspections may seem procedural, they are critical safeguards that protect Albertans.
Featuring insights from an experienced safety codes officer, each video walks viewers through key considerations that contribute to successful projects and ensure compliance.
About the Series
The six videos cover the core elements of the permitting process reflect the needs of Alberta’s construction sector:
• Understanding the Permit Process – A step‑by‑step overview of how to apply for a permit under the Safety Codes Act.
• Drawings and Plans – What accurate, complete plans look like and why they matter.
• Required Documentation – Common documents needed for different project types.
• Avoiding Common Errors – Frequent mistakes that delay projects, and how to prevent them.
• Safety and Compliance – Why safety codes exist, and how they protect people and property.
• New Home Warranty – How warranty requirements connect to the permitting process.
These videos were created to help viewers understand not just what is required, but why these requirements matter.
